Donna Summer was disco. When looking back to the late 1970s, there is no better representation of disco music than Donna Summer. Because of Summer's connection to disco music, she has also long been associated with the gay community and the feminism. Through her embrace of sexual liberation, Summer's characterized the shift that occurred because of second wave feminism.

The song "Hot Stuff" symbolizes the experimentation and freedom that the 1970s feminist movement embraced. Women now had to freedom to express their sexuality. This also embraces the idea of women and men having more than one causal, sexual partner. Prior to the feminist movement in the 1970s, women could not freely discuss their intimate lives; however, with songs such as "Hot Stuff" this shift towards openly discussing relationships has occurred.
