A look into the Impact of The Rise of Second Wave Feminism and Its Impact on Female Musicians

Exploring the connection between feminism and female musical artists/performers of the 1970s
During the 1970s, a resurgence of feminism occurred that fought for equality of men and women. This equality began inside the home and extended to the workplace and into society. At the forefront of the movement was the idea of sisterhood among all women, though it rarely extended to women of color.* It also promoted ideas of freedom of choice and bodily autonomy, with Roe vs. Wade at the center of the movement. During this same decade, women in the music industry began achieving greater success and fame. The purpose of this project is to determine the connection, if any, between the Second Wave Feminism movement and the rise of the female musician in the 1970s. It extends beyond the popular feminist anthem "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy. It explores the timeline of both the feminist movement and the top charting songs of five of the most popular female artists of the 1970s.

The Second Wave Feminism era is greatly defined in historical literature. The female musicians this website focuses on were chosen based on a collection of data driven/ranking websites as well as from music charts from the 1970s. The songs chosen for each musician represent their highest charting song or another popular song that incorporated feminist themes and ideologies. This was compiled through use of digital and print media and multiple song analyses from songs found on Spotify and YouTube.

*Women of color were often left out of these conversations due to the racist ideologies of the time and the different situations they faced.
